GED Overview
The General Educational Development (GED) test is a widely recognized certification that evaluates an individual’s knowledge in four core subject areas: Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning Through Language Arts. Earning a GED credential signifies that the individual possesses academic skills on par with a high school graduate in the United States or Canada.
Serving as an alternative to the U.S. High School Diploma, HiSET, and TASC, the GED is an excellent option for those who were unable to complete traditional high school education and are now seeking to pursue higher education or employment opportunities abroad.
King’s Global College is one of the few institutions in Pakistan offering the GED program, helping students gain access to colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
Features
The GED® test is structured around four key subject areas: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. Each subject is designed to assess a candidate’s understanding and proficiency in these core academic disciplines. The test includes a range of question formats to evaluate various skills, including multiple choice, drag and drop, hot spot (where candidates select a specific area on a graphic), fill in the blank, short answer, and extended response. These diverse question types ensure a comprehensive assessment of a test-taker’s critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
Subject Breakdown
The GED® test is divided into four subject areas, each with its own structure, timing, and focus. Reasoning Through Language Arts lasts 150 minutes and is divided into three sections, with a 10-minute break between the second and third parts. It includes one essay that must be completed in 45 minutes. This section evaluates reading comprehension, written communication, editing skills, the ability to construct evidence-based arguments, and overall English proficiency necessary for academic or professional success.
Mathematical Reasoning is a 112-minute test split into two parts, with the second part allowing the use of a calculator. An on-screen TI-30XS calculator is provided, along with a math formula and reference sheet. The section tests quantitative problem-solving skills (45%) and algebraic problem-solving abilities (55%).
The Science section runs for 90 minutes in a single session without breaks. It also permits use of the on-screen TI-30XS calculator. The content is divided into Life Science (40%), Physical Science (40%), and Earth and Space Science (20%). This portion assesses a candidate’s ability to interpret scientific texts and solve problems within scientific contexts.
Social Studies has a duration of 70 minutes and allows use of the on-screen calculator. It covers Civics and Government (50%), U.S. History (20%), Economics (15%), and Geography and the World (15%). The focus is on interpreting social studies materials, analyzing charts and texts, and solving problems in social and historical contexts.
